Design work for the upgrading of Johannesburg International Airport 's (JIA) 3,5 km secondary runway and supervision of the construction phase, for the Airports Company of South Africa
SSI undertook the design work for the upgrading of JIA's 3,5 km 03R-21L runway and is supervising the construction phase. This follows the successful refurbishment of JIA's main runway, 03L-21R, last year for the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA). The main motivation for these refurbishments is the advent of the Superjumbo to commercial scheduled flights in 2007 — the largest passenger airliner in the world.
One of the most demanding aspects of the runway refurbishment was that the runway must remain fully operational throughout the project. Work is only conducted between 10 pm and 7 am and international safety requirements are observed at all times, including laying asphalt surfacing that increases the height of the runway no more than 0,5% at a time.

Geometric design
Authorities are increasingly shifting their emphasis from road alignment safety and economic designs to requiring environmental impacts, socio-economic impacts and proof that roads will be constructed using labour intensive construction methods, in line with the Expanded Public Works Program (EPWP). SSI's geometric designers are committed to adhering to the requirements of these authorities and we have introduced a specialist service to assist clients in the field of geometric design of roads and railway.
The services we offer in this arena can be combined into a comprehensive project, or implemented on a menu basis — or individually — to suit clients' needs. Our offering includes:
Route determination for roads and railway
Design of freeways and urban roads
Design of rural roads
Vehicle terminals (taxi ranks, bus ranks, traffic control centres etc)
Design of internal and external township roads
Road stormwater drainage management
Design of railway lines
Design of airport runways, taxiways including rapid exit taxiways (RETs) and holding bays, using ICAO Annexure 14
Drawings
Project cost estimating
Contract documents and materials specifications
Projects
Design of the N4 Platinum Highway
Basic design of the N17 Freeway
Route determination for the Rail Commuter Corridor in Mabopane-Winterveld Babelegi, for the South African Rail Commuter Corporation
Design of Traffic Control Centres for Overloaded vehicles along the N1 in Limpopo
Design and construction of Rapid Exit Taxiways at Johannesburg International Airport , South Africa
Upgrading of various airport runways including the upgrading of runway 03R/21L to Code 4F at the Johannesburg International
Upgrade of runway at George Airport, South Africa
Investigating the ICAO requirements for the A380 aeroplane at Johannesburg International Airport
Design of Ivory Park Township Roads, Johannesburg , South Africa

SSI has responded to the present shortage of structural design capacity in our country and the growth in demand for infrastructure such as building structures, bridges and reservoirs, by providing a complete range of services associated with bridges and structures. We harness sophisticated computer-based methods for geotechnical, static and dynamic structural analysis and our design staff is experienced in the use of the full spectrum of construction materials, including structural steel, reinforced and pre-stressed concrete, timber and masonry.
In this area of expertise, SSI has pioneered several innovative techniques, including jacking of substantial structures under rail tracks with minimal disruption to traffic, incremental launching of bridges along the radius of a sphere and cable stayed incremental launching of bridges of up to 66 m lengths. We have also gained invaluable experience in the design and construction of bridges over undermined ground, where foundations are subject to differential settlement and earth tremors.
Scope of expertise:
Structural steel and reinforced concrete bridge design
Piling design
Reinforced concrete retaining wall design
Causeway design
Culvert design
Reinforced concrete water retaining structure design
Structural steel designs for shopping complexes
Structural frame and load bearing brick work designs for building structures which include schools, hospitals, clinics, prisons, welfare offices and shopping complexes
Structural Stability Investigations
Site monitoring/supervision and site administration
Detailing of these structures utilising the AutoCad package
Stuctures Projects:
The Mohale Feeder Road Bridges project, part of the phase 2B Mohale Dam project for the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority in Lesotho .
SSI's work comprised a single lane incrementally launched vehicular bridge, 449 m long and 91 m high, a single lane incrementally launched vehicular bridge, 308 m long and 69 m high, a footbridge incrementally launched 273 m long and 60 m high. All the bridges consisted mainly of concrete spread footings and hollow rectangular piers. The decks comprised structural steel box girders. We were involved with the structural design of the pedestrian bridge and site monitoring and administration of the construction of the three bridges. The construction period was 20 months despite extreme weather conditions which included floods, snow, high winds and temperature spirals.
Upgrading of the Msinga Welfare offices in Tugela Ferry KwaZulu-Natal (KZN)
This project was carried out for the KZN Department of Works, to upgrade its existing welfare offices in Msinga, as a result of the increase in population and demand for better facilities. The existing facilities comprised a single storey structure with a small seated waiting area. SSI added a new double storey load bearing brickwork structure, plus a waiting area and payout building to the existing building.
P700 Upgrade to blacktop surface incorporating bridges and culverts
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport appointed the Ibhongo/Stewart Scott joint venture to upgrade the existing road between Ulundi and Richards Bay . During Phase 1 of the project — which was 3.5km long — four bridges were widened, one bridge was reconstructed and eight box culverts were constructed.
